An old dining chair

What to do with an old chair

I have had this chair ‘sitting’ around for a long time and I didn’t have a clue what to do with it. I had an idea but it meant cutting the chair in half which caused me to pause for a bit and then I thought why not, just go for it and so I did.

I cut the chair in half and used 2 x 2 inch timber to join together

I didn't take enough photos between this stage and the last. This picture shows the bench with it's finished seat and back.

Moving from the chair cut in half to the bench took some time. I paused for thought to ensure I got the right timber for the seat of the bench/chair. Once I made that decision I used the same material for the seat back. I bought a Ryobi One palm router a while ago and whilst I have used it for several projects, this was the first time it was to be used for decorative purposes. I used it to put a rounded edge to the front of the bench and the top of the seat back. It was coming together.

Next was painting and sanding followed by painting and sanding followed by painting and sanding… I used several different colours throughout the painting with the idea of sanding and exposing some of the coats to give it a more authentic look.

The almost finished bench. It needs sanding back to expose some of the paint layers.

The bench is nearly finished, some final sanding but I am left with a question. Does the seat back look right, should I add something to to the top?
