Speckledy Hens
Sue and Oli (real names Mrs Cornwell and Mrs Miller) are Speckledy Chickens. A Speckledy chicken is a hybrid breed of chicken developed in the UK in the early 2000s. It is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and a Maran.
The Great Escape
Once upon a time, in a cozy little henhouse nestled in the countryside, two twin chickens named Sue and Oli were hatching a plan—literally! These weren’t just any chickens; they were renowned far and wide (at least, by the other chickens) for their mischievous escapades.
One fine morning, as the farmer was counting his eggs, Sue and Oli found themselves encased in their shells, plotting their grand escape. Sue, the mastermind, pecked softly at her shell and whispered, “Okay, Oli, on the count of three. One… two… three—push!”
With all the might their tiny chick bodies could muster, they pushed against their shells. Instead of the coordinated escape they had envisioned, however, both ended up rolling out of the nest, shells still intact. They looked like two little escape pods wobbling dangerously on the edge of the nest platform.
“Brilliant escape there, Sue,” chuckled Oli, eyeing the ground far below.
“Quiet! We’re not done yet,” Sue huffed, a tiny bit of eggshell stuck sassily to her head.
After a moment of regaining their composure (and direction), they resumed their pecking with renewed vigor. This time, the shells started to crack just as the farmer’s cat, Whiskers, sauntered into the henhouse.
Seeing the commotion, Whiskers approached with a curious glint in her eye. “Need a paw with that?” she mewed, amusement evident in her voice.
“Nope, we’ve got it all cracked up!” Oli declared just as her head burst through the shell, looking slightly dazed but triumphant.
Sue followed suit, emerging with an air of dignity only a freshly hatched chicken could muster. They stood there, side by side, the most charmingly disheveled pair of chicklets one could imagine.
From that day on, the tales of Sue and Oli’s ‘Great Egg Escape’ became legendary. Not just for the escape itself, but for the laughter and joy it brought to all who heard it. And as for Whiskers, she always made a point to check in on her amusing feathered friends, ensuring their future escapades were nothing short of egg-ceptional.
What do you call a chicken in a shell suit? An Egg!
