The dismantled bike with components

Turning a £5 bike into a dream bike

A while ago I bought a couple of bikes for £10. The one I wanted was with a bit of work ready to ride (replaced an inner tube and oiled and greased the bike). This one was given to Mia and she has been using it over the summer. In the winter this one will get a complete overhaul, the other bike was wrecked and needed some extensive work to ensure it would be rideable again. That work started yesterday. In the picture below it is the bike in the rear.

First job was to dismantle the bike of all it’s components and to clean up and inspect each item to decide whether it needed cleaning, restoring or binning. And this is what we ended up with:

A box of bits and some metal. It doesn’t look much does it but when that is put back together it will look a lot better, ride a lot better and I will have a sense of achievement as I ride down the road.

So in the course of one day I had learnt to dismantle a bike and then learn to sandblast the paint from the bicycle frame. Difficult but very enjoyable.

Finally apply paint.

Chris and I are gradually turning this into a business. Take a look at Electric Bikes Cornwall.
